Grow Your Own Magazine

I just went out and had a walk around my garden. I planted my cucumbers out last nite into pots and i just looked at them which are very limp!!

Any ideas please?

It was pretty cold last night and I'm wondering if they were properly hardened off?

it was really cold up here in yorkshire last night and there have been lots of warnings of ground & air frosts all over the country so it might have been that. If it is I don't know that there's much you can do to rescue them

oh sugar lumps!! Off to plant a few more then!!

you say you did it at night,if it's inside it might just be very upset with it's move and if you watered it,sitting with it's roots in cold water,if so it might be ok,will not hurt to sow some more as you say,if they are an outdoor type,outside last night for the first time,and they not completly done for,could be a benefit to overnight in the green house,or give it a little protection with fleece,see how it goes,another thing is,if the compost is to wet,lift it out and replace with some dryer,and do not water it for a couple of days,always worth a try.

well it was about 3pm that i potted it on!! It had been in the cold frame. I am a bit annoyed with myself but i guess thats what this is all about mistakes, corrections and correct plantings.

no matter what age we are,we never done learning,and just sometimes,what worked once,perhaps will not another,stick with it,last year was my first time ever with an allotment and i did great,this year i am stugling a bit,but i will not give in.

really. you must. you can't just take plants out of a greenhouse or coldframe and plonk them right outdoors and think they'll like it. They need gently and gradually acclimatising, over 7-10 days, to the cooler temps of the outside. This cold North wind will be especially shocking if they've lived all their lives under cover.

You say you've planted them into pots. Were they in pots before? What size pots have you put them and how much water did you give them? If you've moved them from small pots or trays into huge pots and overwatered them (plus stuck them outside in the cold) then they are going to sulk big-time!
