I have tried growing swedes a couple of times with success. This last batch, I thought, was doing okay, until I looked at the actual soil where the heads should form, and find that they look a bit leggy. Should I transplant the heads deeper in the soil or just accept that I should have transplanted earlier or should I just the whole lot out? Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't move them now,it's early yet for swedes so they may have time to swell. -
They are always a bit leggy anyway but ask yourself 'have you thinned them enough?'
You can transplant thinnings, with a good clot of earth, but then it isn't always a certainty they will produce a good swede.Comment

Swedes are classed as root veg, and most don't transplant well. Why not earth them up a bit, like you do potatoes?Comment

That leggy stalk bit will thicken and turn into the swede itself. You dont need to earth them up. Just make sure they have plenty of water and leave them be. I have some lovely size swede so far and they bulb up an develop from the leggy bit of stalk like beetroot an turnips do.

Thanks for the helpful advice guys. I did thin the swedes out several weeks ago, so I will leave them be for a bit longer - maybe just being impatient with only about 3 out of 30 forming heads. By the way, what is wrong with Brassicas?
