  • leek seed heads

hi all, looking at the 20 or so leek seed heads i have maturing,i noticed 1 has developed what looks like grass growing from it,on close inspection it appears to be tiny leeks, the other one's are still pom-pom's,is this usuall,as i thought they only grew from the seed,
Would it be a good idea,if i was to plant the tiny ones into moduals,to over winter, and outside or in please,i keep checking the pom-pom's but so far the seed is still green, have snaped a few pics, thanks a lot peeps ,1st is the grass like head,2nd i parted it to have a look in the centre, last 1 is how the others all are,

Have a little read of this....

I shaved 3 and have now got leek grass growing.

I'm intending to plant into corners of the lottie and uproot and separate once they are bigger.

I wouldn't shave if you've got them - I just shaved mine to get the effect.

Fi - when were your leeks sown that are going to seed now?

FionaH,they all go to seed eventually, when they do,the seed head stalk comes from the bottom up the centre of the leek,in doing so,the leek is no good as it's to tough and stringy,if you gently squeeze the bottom of the leek, you should be able to feel the strong stalk,it's like a cane, hope i have explaind things in a way you understand, best to pull up and use what you can, just leave in the ground the one's you want for seed heads, you can feeze them,or make soup and freeze.
