  • Late season planting due to holiday.

Hi Im walking The Coast to Coast in May return ing 22. Thinking of sowing my beetroot, swde and turnips in modules when I get back for winter use. Not tried growing swede or turnips before any tips please. I hope this wont be too late im in Northamptonshire.

I'd sow some direct before you go as I find that works very well (one of the few veggies I don't do in modules). If for any strange reason they do fail then you can sow in modules the moment you return.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I was also going to suggest sowing direct...but perhaps securely fix some fleece over them for a bit of added warmth at night?
That way you don't need to worry about watering or them being nibbled from above ?

Also the fleece will keep any pigeons off. Round here the pigeons seem to prefer Swedes over any other Brassica. I may produce a Brassica pigeon preference table

Why not try both especially if you have the space, normally come with far too many seeds in the pack.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

I always sow direct with turnips, swede and beetroot..Sow before you head off is my suggestion....
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
