  • Kale disaster!

I've just returned from a 10 day holiday to my whole crop of kale totally wrecked by the dreaded caterpillars. Everything else survived pretty well as had a friend watering. Do you think its too late to try to sow some more? I also thought I might try sowing some perp spinach where the garlic has just come out? Any thoughts?!

My pack of Kale Scarlet says to sow March - August for salad leaves and up to June for mature plants. So yep you can still sow and you it's always worth seeing if you can carry any through for mature plants.

I've just sown some spinach in modules today, 2 different varieties. As well as some spring cabbage and some viola seeds.

If you have the space I think it's worth giving things a go, as a lot comes down to what kind of weather/winter we have.

Well the patch will only be empty otherwise so I guess its worth a go! Fingers crossed it stays mild for a while longer. Thanks!

Snap - the same happened to me - went away for 5 days and came back to a caterpillar invasion in the greenhouse on my kale seedlings that I had potted up prior to going away - a few have survived, so I know how you feel.

Sound be OK to sow kale still, especially if we have a mild autumn.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
