    Just been given an allotment

    Hello all,

    After waiting for nearly 3 years, I had a phone call to offer me an allotment, so after going down to look at teh plot last night I am the proud tenant on a lovely allotment.

    I would like some advice on what I can plant now, and what jobs I should be doing, I am very lucky as my allotment is completely empty and has been recetly turned over, so all help would be grateful.

    How fantastic for you!!!!

    has it been rotorvated?- if so you'll want to hand dig it whilst it's still soft and pull out any weeds which have been rolled into the soil.
    This will save you hours and hours of time next spring/year

    If it's been hand dug- then that's fantastic!!!

      Plant up what you can now, and cover the rest for winter, with a mulch or a green manure.

          I got mine end of August / Early Sept a couple of years ago but it was waist high in brambles and weeds so I had to clear it first. All we had the time to do was cut and clear and cover and then started digging in earnest in the spring. However if yours is already clearish then you have a good head start. As stated above, cover any areas you aren't planting or you'll be back to square one next year as weeds take over quickly. Other than that, measure up, work out where you want fixed items like shed, compost heap etc and plan your beds. These can just be marked out with pegs and string. You're too late to grow most winter veg from seed but it would be worth getting some young plants from the garden centre and you can sow spring cabbages now. Over winter you can put in garlic and some onions too as well as trying for an early crop of broad beans and peas.

          Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

            Many thanks for all the advice, I am going down there on sunday, to cover the whole lot with some membrane, and I will put up a few pics.

              thats really exciting. ive found out that ive gone from 22nd to 5th in just over a year on the allotment list. that makes an imporvement on the year before when i managed to just move from 24th to 22nd lol!
