On impulse I've just bought 8 Rocket potatoes so I was wondering is it too late to start chitting them or would I be better off planting them in their buckets.

Plant them when you are ready
. Chit them in the meantime. If you want to plant them today, that's fine. Planting will achieve more than chitting them will, but if you are not ready to plant them then chitting them will start the process of "growing" by breaking the dormancy of the seed tuber.

You can plant them straight in the ground if you want, chitted or not although they'll take a little bit longer to surface. Can do buckets too but either is fine.
