If i sowed some 'White Lisbon Winter Hardy' spring onions now, when could i (realistically) expect to harvest? Also, would they grow in 3-inch deep gravel trays?

Spring onions take approx 12 weeks from sowing to harvest...

As for 3" trays...not sure.....possibly..... but i'm always supprised at quite how big their roots can get so personally i'd put them in flower pots instead of trays.

Have grown White Lisbon for the last few years (along with an Italian onion) and sow in a raised bed in March/April but eat through the summer/early Autumn (or as long as they last) as salad onions and even roast the larger ones. Would agree that I wouldn't sow them in 3 inch trays but pots would do as they do put down quite a lot of roots.

I sowed some spring onion seeds last week and they have germinated already. I am taking a chance.

I've grown them in modules, 4 or 5 to a module and they do fine, you virtually have to harvest a module at a time, as the roots all stick together.
I have started them off in September before and then had them ready for early spring. You can also then plant the modules out and they will grow on.
I would have thought maybe a bit late to get any of size this year and maybe a bit early to grow for next spring, but then I've never tried it

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I always sow a few lots in containers as late as August/September and then bring them into the cold greenhouse over winter. They get an early start for the next year and give me usable onions in April if the weather is not too cold.

I would suggest something deeper than 3 inches. I use the small flower buckets.
