  • I have peas!!!

So what's so great about that, you may well ask. Well, I don't usually grow peas because you need a fair few plants to get a respectable meals worth or two, or so I've found in the past, and so I grow Mangetout instead.

However, that said, this year I did sow some peas for shoots, planted the seedlings into 7 inch pots and have been taking shoots regularly.

Mother nature, it would seem, had other ideas though and ALL my first sowing of peas for shoots (now about 1.5 foot tall and no foliage to speak of as we've eaten it all ) have pods, swelling nicely, tucked up in the greenhouse with the rest of the salads .

Nice bonus but just goes to show that Ma Nature has the last say, whatever we mere mortals may plan.

Well done Reet. You're right about the amount you have to grow to get a boiling. I just grow dwarf now for the grandchildren to pick and eat outside and I can usually pod one or two to put in with my salad.

I thought it was compulsory to grow a row, just so there were some handy snacks for when doing the weeding

Think OH would leave me if I didn't grow peas, have about finished the first 3' dwarf row in the polytunnel and am just starting on the first 4' (tall) row outside. Have another 4 rows of tall ones to follow as well as loads of mange tout which are harvesting now too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Great isn't it! I had a mix of green and golden in my salad last night. Enjoyed them so much that we are having them again tonight!

I had my first Ambassador pea harvest with dinner yesterday - yum! I planted loads this year to ensure we have plenty - as well as sugar snaps and mange tout.

My peas have failed this year: the drought and the pigeons/sparrows did for them. I'm just chitting another batch now

Fortunatley peas are good to go at most times of the year.
We've eaten our first Kent Blue mangetout and I've sampled some of the purple mangetout I'm breeding - mustn't eat too many - must save seed!

It'll be Mangetout with tea tonight and most nights for the foreseeable future, judging by the numbers of flowers our first pyramid has on it
