I've had to start moving toms out of the GH and onto a sunny, sheltered part of the garden as the two 8'x6' GH's are stuffed. What success are you having with your outdoor toms so far this year and which ones are working best for you?

tamina tomatoes are just beginning to turn red. Gardeners delight aren't doing much yet (just a few tiny toms set so far). Miscellaneous beefsteak tomatoes are slowly getting larger. -

I had a late start with donated plants and newly sown seeds (Minibel) in April. They have been outside in buckets for the last few weeks and the plants aren't much further ahead than the seeds.
The plants have open flowers and the seeds have tight flowers. All I need is some sun me'thinks.Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Gosh"- only just putting out your tomatoes into the garden, although taking into account that you are up in scotland, I suppose they need to be held back a bit later because it takes a bit longer to warm up north of the border,
However-mine are about four foot high at the moment planted out since the last week in may, and have little tomatoes on most of them about as big as pigeon eggs-I expect them to be almost full size by the end of July-(already ripe in the greenhouse) , and start to harvest them by mid august-through to late October, barring early frosts.
I mostly go by Moon phase planting- most people would dismiss this as absolute clap trap, but believe me it works marvelously. you can obtain charts from off the internet for your particular zone and area, and it improves germination of tomato seeds by as much as thirty percent in some cases, my sowing date is around March fifteenth three days before a full moon is due, it is something to do with the gravity pull of the moon that effects the germination results, especially on a rainy month.
Moon phase planting out is also a great guide and plants nearly always do well as a result of following the charts and guides, it is not quite full Bio-diversity growing but very close to it.Comment

I have had mine out in the garden for around 3-4 weeks, all doing fine and all have fruit on. The plants I have outside are garden pearl and money maker. I think there are a couple of cherry tomatoes out there two.
Cant wait for them to start to turn red!

i too try to follow bio-dynamic's regarding sowing etc. my outdoor tom's(jersey devil, plum) which are in 11 l pots, have been out since late may and have green fruit about hen egg size now.Comment

Mine are thriving, millions of flowers but no fruit yet, about 4 1/2 ft high. Our makeshift greenhouse made from corrogated plastic has worked really well in protecting them from the wind, now they are over the top, they are on their own a bit!We plant the seed, nature grows the seed, we eat the seed - Neil, The Young Ones

Mine are doing fine. I've been eating them for the last 2 weeks.
The were sown very early and had to go outside in May. It's been a bit of a struggle with them but they've made it. These ones are Red Alert.

I've got Sub Arctic Plenty, Money Maker and British Breakfast this year. One of each are in a grow bag and the spares are dotted around the flower beds. They are all about 18" tall, and so far only Sub Arctic seems to have any flowers...we shall see.Comment

I've got sunbaby and alicante which have both been outside for some time. Am delighted to say that they both have flowers and little idey bidey tomatoes on!!!Comment

Mine have been out in dribs and dabs, many have the first flowers either oen or just coming on.
My moon-trial for garlics will be ready later this week, and unless the final non-moons are stonking the results are looking in favour of the moon thus far

I am growing Gardeners Delight, Organic Falco Rosso, Noir Trifele, Outdoor Girl, Marmande, Ferline, and Harbinger. All of those that I planted out at the allotment in the first part of June are forming flower buds now. I planted them out with plenty of fish, blood, and bone. The ones that I still have in pots waiting in the back garden are somewhat behind in their development. They were all sown around Feb. 26 and potted up into 3" pots on April 19 with New Horizons organic compost.Last edited by marigold007; 29-06-2009, 12:39 PM.Comment
