  • How tall are your cucumber canes?

    Hello,

I have just planted my cucumber plants (x2) into a growbag in my conservatory. The canes we've put in are four foot (one per plant to grow up). They just don't look tall enough. How tall are your canes?

    Thanks,

    Eve

I've got a large piece of garden trellis at the back of mine so they can climb up it, they seem very happy with it, the idea was a good freinds, but it works.

Last year mine went up a cane to the top of the greenhouse, climbed along the roof, then down the otherside, it was huge

You could tie some string under the grow bag, spiral it up around the cane and tie it to the central roof strut in your GH, that's what I'm planning to do with my cuke's

I only have quite a short cane but I then train the vines out onto wires which are horizontally spaced up the wall of the greenhouse and up onto the sloping roof.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Me too. My canes are definitely too short at the moment.
People keep saying to tie things to the central strut in the GH roof. How do you do this when you have one that is integral to the structure. I can't work out how to attach anything. Is there a nifty gadget that slots into the dip in the middle of the strut. If so could someone advise on where you can get these?

Me neither. I only have a 5' plastic greenhouse and luckily only one lonely cucumber plant in a very flat looking growbag that I got at a discount store.
I think I will plant it in a bucket and take the shelves out of my greenhouse once the cucumber gets bigger. its only about 6" tall at the mo.

I'd better get a second plastic greenhouse for my other stuff.

I feel so dim. It just shows how reliant I've been on supermarket veggies that I have never seen a cucumber plant and had no idea how big they grow!

All cucurbits grow big...and can be quite feisty.

I grew an exploding cucumber last year - not really for eating more as novelty.

It grew and grew - outdoors in the rain - it kicked some beans off their 8ft canes and was being a norty boy getting in everywhere - so I chopped it back and pulled out its roots just before we went away for a week.

I came back to the plant half the size again - no idea where it had rooted from - it must have put down extra roots and grown from that.

I left this one and kept it cut back to about 6 exploding cuke fruits.....and saved the seeds and gave them all away.

Only to find 2 more growing in the same spot this year. I had wrapped each cuke in fleece so that when they exploded they didn't fly everywhere but some must have got out.

Amazing that they didn't get frosted, or rot; and germinated in the spring.

I outed them as soon as I saw them. Flippin things.

This year I am growing achota and some other mini cukes outdoors, as well as marketmore cukes which grow well outdoors. I've also got them in the greenhouse and they are romping away.

I didn't realise they grew that big either! Can you nip the top out to stop them getting so tall? I've only got a small greenhouse!
