  • How many PSB plants?

I've got some purple sprouting broccoli seedlings but I'm not sure how many to grow. I'm hoping to have enough for 4 adults and 2 children. One website suggests 12 plants for 2 adults but to have a min of 24 plants seems a bit excessive seeing as though they are so big!

Well, it all depends how much you eat, of course.

It has a relatively short season, and I get sick of it after a fortnight (I have four plants this year, just for me)

(and I found it doesn't freeze well, it disintegrates).

I have 6 plants and that is enough for 2 adults and a teenager ( younger one won't touch it!) also some for my elderly neighbour. 8 plants for you perhaps? I 've never tried freezing but apparently it does. 24 would take up a huge amount of space for a very long time too. Good Luck!

        Oh dear.

It looks like I'm going to be eating PSB for breakie, lunch AND dinner for most of the start of next year then.

I usually grow 4 plants for the two of us which gives us quite a few meals but we also have lots of other stuff to eat so I don't want it every day. As you say they take up a lot of space for a long time and 24 would take up a hell of a lot of space that could be used for something else and you'd end up eating it every day with that many plants and I like variety.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I would say six to seven would be plenty given that eating it everyday is not realistic... I have five and that amount is still producing food to feed 2 adults and three children...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

So the general consensus is 24 is too many then! I think I will come straight to this forum to research in the future.

I have 4 Summer Early & 4 of a later variety. Feeds two of us easily with some to give away to the son. SWMBO does freeze it but mixes it with other green veg in a light chees sauce.

FF if your into GYO its the only place to be.

We had 4 white sprouting broccoli and 6 PSB this year, but see if you can get a packet of mixed varieties for the PSB - Marshalls sell a blend.

We had some that was edible at Christmas (that plant's in the compost now) and are still harvesting the other types so it's extended the season nicely, and we've supplied Mrs Vince's parents too.

I have eight plants, but to save on space i just dot them around the allotment and underplant them. Same with kale and sprouts.

I'd underplant Snadger with a good layer of gentle sarcasm and rolley-eyes smilies
