  • How big's your shed

What is an acceptable size for an allotment shed?

Am in the process of trying to get one so was just thinking, how big should I go!!!

You need to find out what size you are allowed on your site as some have a limit. Mine is 6 x 4 ( i think ) and it is big enough for what I need my OH put a slated runner under the windows and fitted a table like top along the side and shelves above, along the back are shelves and hooks for hanging tools etc. He put boarding up first to screw things to rather than lots of screws on the shed. Under the table top is room for buckets and larger items, the slatted shelf holds my gaz top for the kettle ( most important to have one of those ) I also have hooks for the long bamboo canes so they fit under the roof along the back wall and my rigid plastic polytunnel fits one end on the top shelf the other towards the door above my head. Anything else just gets put in and I shut the door.

      From memory 5x7

It's only just big enough to be honest- but then again I'm a hoarder! ( drives OH mad!)

I like wall space to hang things from, so if it were much bigger, I'd be clambering over the mess in the middle to get to stuff on the walls.

7x 10 would be good, cos then I could fit some old kitchen units and still have space to trip over the mower/chicken wire/fold up seats.

Two 5x7 sheds would give even more wall space with it wouldn't it???...now you've got me thinking!!!!!!

On our site we are not allowed more than 6x4
haven't actually got one yet but everyone else seems to cope with that size...

6x4 is the allowed size but I had to send a plan for approval to the town council showing the exact position of the shed on the plot! They then sent me a very polite letter saying my application had been approved!

5x7 but ours is full of boxes of spuds and toms - but this usually gives me enough room to store what I need.

                I would go for a 12 by 6 because i think that a 6 by 4 is a bit small

My Shed has reverse Tardis tendancies small inside but large out.
I can never get into it cause it's full of junk.
But when I painted it last week it was massive on the outside.

There doesn't seem to be an upper limit on our site. One plot holder has a "shed" that's about 30' x 10' and houses the biggest rotorvator I've ever seen.

When he first got it, I was walking up the hill towards him and saw these big metal spoked wheels, at first I thought, that should keep the pigeon population down as it looked for all world like a cannon.

Myself, at present I've got a wooden 8x6 shed but have bought a secondhand 13x10 metal job, which hopefully I will erect this winter.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

The blue shed in my avatar is 7 x 5.
It's just big enough ... for my tools, a bookcase, shelves, a chest of drawers, a table and a comfy chair.
I've got lots of hooks in the ceiling for drying onions etc.

We have two 8 x 6 sheds on different plots. One is the "tool shed" and the other is the "tea shed" with seats from a 1950's bus, a gas stove, filling cabinet and a small table.

Its perfect for having a break with other lottie holders or planning next years beds, and with all of the tools in the other shed, clutter free.

We're painting ours today, in Two_Sheds_Blue in honour of our very own Two-Sheds.

I put up hooks/screws inside for all the tools, but am going to be adding many many more to try and keep everything off the floor and out of the plastic containers.

We've got another one, at home; which is mainly filled with the lawnmower that we don't need and the other lawnmower that we inherited with this house.

Both are going to be rammed full soon though - as soon as the planning permission comes through we are knocking down an old garage and every inch of space will be needed before the garden room and greenhouse go up...time is running out for the two lawnmowers...

My 'main' shed is 7'x7', it was on special offer in Focus It's big enough for tools, chair, shelves, worktop, stove, kettle etc. I've also got a 6'x6' on the other plot with tools, rotovator, strimmer etc in it.

So, ok - they didn't have any Two_Sheds_Blue so I had to go for Sherwood_Forest_Green - but at least it is painted up.
