  • Help! Showing sweetcorn

For some mad reason I decided to enter my (admittedly gorgeous) sweetcorn in a local show this year. Do I just leave it intact or peel back the leaves? Any tips welcome please.

I couldn't find much info except this small paragraph:

"With the corn, I try to leave a stump at the base, cut cleanly about an inch and a half long. Peel a couple of the tatty outer leaves off if need be. When at the show, peel back around a quarter of the leaves in a strip, so as to show off the well pollinated straight lines of kernel"

It helps if you tuck a twenty pound note under it too.

Somehow I don't think so...........1st prize is only £3 and I am not a particularly competitive person.

I usually put sweetcorn in our local show (and never do very well with it....) but the Show Schedule should specify somewhere how it's to be presented.... e.g. ours states "2 cobs presented in husk for judge to open". So we don't open it beforehand and I usually leave a single leaf on as it looks much better (though that can be problematic if lots of entries on one table). If you don't open it/them then you'll need to check another one for ripeness. Good luck GF, great fun showing stuff..... And Harrogate next week (spectator only!) where the standard is unbelievable.....
