    Help with climbing beans and brussels please

    Hi all,

    For the first time this year I am growing french climbing beans blauhilde and nectargold. Can any one tell me how many beans I should grow up each cane for best yields. Also how many plants do you think I will need to feed a family of four.

    Similarly I am growing brussels for the first time - falstaff purple variety, I have planted out 6 plants, but I still have lots in pots - not sure if I should plant these in my garden also or give them away. Has anyone grown this variety of sprout that can tell me how many plants would keep me in sprouts for the winter.

    With the beans, I always went with a bean or 2 per pole dunno if it's the best yield wise, but was easiest for me( I worked on the spacings rather than the no of beans per pole)

    As to the sprouts, not grown that variety, but all depends on how many you eat and how often In our family(also 4) we'd eat through 2 doz plants easily. Also do you have the space for as many as you've in pots? If so, then go for it, you can always freeze your glut if it's too much

      I grow one per cane, each cane is 9" from its neighbour.

      I get about 100g of dried bean from each plant (I don't eat them fresh).

      I grow probably 100+ plants a year, which keeps me and Himself in (kidney) beans all year

        I found the beans from runners horrible to eat with vey thick skins. What are the best ones to dry and am I too late? I have quite a few climbing French blue lake on the go. Do they eat well?

          I don't eat the purple seeded ones, only the whites, and they're just like butterbeans (White Lady, Emergo, Moonlight etc)

            Gosh RedThorn 2 dozen sprout plants must give hugh yields. We would probably only eat about 20 sprouts a week in my house - I like eating them, but don't like the bother of preparing them for cooking.

            Thanks for the advice of 2 climbing beans per pole.

            I want to eat them fresh. I have ten poles so that will be 20 plants - will that be enough? ( we could easily get through at least 50 bean pods a week)
