  • he knew his onions

when I was small my granddad used to join 4 bricks onto their sides to make a square hollow area, this he filled with good soil and pressed it down firm, he then used an old table fork to rough up the square and sowed his spring onions and removed the bricks, each fortnight he did the same so there were 6/8 of these earth blocks and each had their onions in various state of growth and he said it worked better than just being sown into the ground. last year I tried both, blocks of soil and rows in the ground and the "blocks" onions were far better than the "rows" ones. I think this is because of the better drainage but I don't care , I only do the blocks now and have 3 on the go so far and all seem to be doing well, does anyone else use this method? it would be an old fashioned way of doing it but my granddad grew all the veg the old fashioned sized family needed and would not use any poisons(as he called any man made chemical),I love my onions with cheese, in a doorstep sandwich......aaaaaaaggggghhh bliss..

I've never grown spring onions in rows...it seems a ridiculous waste of space. Blocks and clumps or in pots is much more sensible.

Sounds likes square foot gardening ahead of it's time.......

Given bricks are 9 inches long I think square three quarters of a foot is more like it

I might have to give this a try, I haven't had any joy getting spring onions to germinate yet..
