  • Growing veg indoors!

Just saw this idea for growing onions in a plastic container that appears to be full of soil. Can't find any details though. Could be a way to use up those onion sets that are sold off cheaply at the end of the season - or to get fresh onion shoots for cooking throughout the winter.

So I just had to try it for myself
Two yoghurt pots, made 2 rows of 4 holes (corkscrew and scissors. You need to cut away some of the plastic or the onion set springs back out again)
Planted 9 onions in one pots and 12 Kelvedon Wonder peas in the other - to see if I can crop them for pea shoots
If you don't try, you'll never know

Yogurt pots are too thin to cut more holes in and I didn't have anything sturdier. A milk container might be better. Those 2 took about 5 minutes. Go on Mark - you know you want to

Why don't you take it one stepfurther and turn them into hanging ,pots, tubs, dutbins, milk cartons etc?

Watering is going to be a problem methinks...................

If they had a hanger you could douse em in a bucket of water.............

                    An update

I can't imagine that the onions will grow bigger but there are plenty of leaves for the snipping. The peas worked too but I didn't make the holes in the side large enough for the shoots to come through, so most of them are growing up towards the top of the pot. I can see their progress through the transparent sides
Would be very easy to do through winter for a supply of indoor pea shoots.

                      Another update

The onions have grown bigger - honest They're probably larger than the ones in the ground that were planted about the same time.
The peas that were sown in a similar way didn't have the sense to find their way out through the holes in the side - just forced their way to the top, whatever depth they were planted at Not worth repeating!!

Sorry, Jen, the original photo isn't mine, I pinched the idea too but put my own modest spin on it.
TBH I think that growing that many onions in a container will be difficult as cutting the holes in the sides weakens the container. It needs to be quite rigid to start with. I may try it again with something other than a yogurt pot!!
                            Good luck
