  • Growing tatties in 40ltr grow sacks

Trying out growing tatties in grow sacks this year. 40ltr capacity, they reccomend 4 tatties in each sack but I've put 3. Anyone used these before and what results have you had.

    What variety are your spuds.

I grow in all sorts of containers from flowers buckets to 80ltr bins and am usually successful.

Epicure is a first early will need to be in the container for about 12 weeks depends on the weather. If you are using MPC I would top dress with either BFB of growmore about 6 weeks in and then give them a good feed of high potash (Tomorite) about 9 weeks.

Pentland Crown is a main crop will need about 22/24 weeks in the container. Again if you are using MPC you will need to start feeding at about 6 weeks. For main crop I use high nitrogen (Miracle Gro) from 6 weeks untill the haulms are fully developed and then change to high potash.

Keep topping up the bags as they grow leaving abour 4" to 6" of greenery above the level of the compost as you go. Don't let them dry out as spuds are mainly water and don't rely on rain when the haulms are over the top of the bin. They act like an umbrella.

        Hope this helps Colin

I would only put 3 spuds in a 40l growsack. It just gives them a bit more room to make decent size tubers. You could get away with 4 of the epicure if you intend to lift them small.

Colin's certainly right about the water. I tipped out a container of Lady Christl today and although the top 6 inches of compost was moist the bottom was completely dry. Got two and a half pounds of taties from two seed but I like to pick them quite small.

SC I am a real green eyed monster here. I have had a couple of boilings of Swift but my LadyC will be awhile yet and there one of my fave spuds.

I'm growing spuds in the green recycling bags the council no longer needed. I have 4 on my allotment with first earlies in. I have put 3 spuds in each one. Not sure what the capacity of them is. They are starting to come through now. I just keep topping them up with some nicely rotten manure, until I reach the top. LOOKING GOOD!

Last year i harvested similar weights with 2 spuds planted as i did with 4,so it's 2 per bag for me from now on,had only slightly less by planting just one!
