Default Growing Potatoes

Just bought a bag of Arran Pilot Potatoes from Wilkos today. I remember seeing a post on here last week telling of how to grow them in pots. It was starting with a bit of compost and adding more when leaves showed. Anyone remember where it was or have a set of instructions?

cheers

I started 2 separate tubers - Arran Pilot and Lady Christle - in 2 well bubblewrap lagged pots in the greenhouse a fortnight ago. The AP wss just showing its first shoot this morning. I've covered it up again now. Started 3 Anyas in a big pot today. I still grow spuds in the ground but it's nice to grow on patio space etc.

I usually put one seed spud in a 10 litre pot. You can either fill to the top with compost at planting time or cover the seed spud with a few inches then top up when the shoots are a few inches long - always leaving the tops of the shoots above the soil.

Give them some 20cm well rotted manured soil underneath, set your seeds, cover them with the same soil 2cm above the seeds and top up the soil as the shoots grow.
I am not good with pot size as their diameter don't give the actual volume. I would use around 12,5 litres of soil per seed (it can be less or more depending how productive the cultivar is).

I put 2 different tubers in 2 different 10" pots. I topped one up a bit at weekend because the shoot was just showing through. The trick is to keep them covered until the soild reaches the top. THEN you have to watch out for frosts and fleece them up at nights!

Im using potato sacks 3 tubers to a sack. They were planted early Jan and the foliage is just getting level with the top of the sacks. I keep topping up around the plants but because some of the plants havn't grown as well as others the soil is only half way up the sacks. The big challange is keeping the frost at bay, I thought I was doing well but at some point a couple of weeks ago the frost just caught a couple of growing tips and blackened them.
