I got my ginger from the supermarket, soaked overnight, planted then it grew.
Sadly, the removal man dropped its large pot in Nov so that was the end of that but they seem to grow very easily.
I also have a pineapple I paid 49p for from one of the cheap supermarkets - twisted the top off and ate what was left, into a hyacinth vase until the roots started then into compost. It's doing really well.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite,the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
