  • The good, the bad and the ugly.......names of fruit and Veg !

A thread on the fruit forum earlier made me think how much I like a good name when i'm choosing varieties.......yes i also look for attractive attributes in the particular variety or possibly some heritage value but at least part of my decision making process (subliminal perhaps) is down to the name. The reality for me is that if it has an awful name its probably not going in my piece of dirt.

Are you like me, and, if so what are the names you love and hate?

    The Good:
    Ashmeads Kernal(Apple)
    Peasgood Nonsuch (Apple)
    Pitmaston Pineapple (Apple)
    Scarlet Emperor (Runner bean)
    Wheelers Imperial (Cabbage)
    Ovi's Romanian Giant (Tomato)
    Picardy Wight (Garlic)

    The Bad
Duncan (Cabbage) great friends with my leek called Dave
Onward (Pear) A motto or a fruit
Ambassy (Apple) mispronounced packet of fags
    Dasher (Tomato) Reindeer or tomato
Boltardy (Beetroot) too functional a name
    Bountiful (Apple)
    Mondeo (Asparagus) Car

    The Terrible
Sarpo Mira (Potato) Sounds like Klingon
Sarpo Axona (Potato) ditto - although possibly worse
    Discovery (Apple) just utterly naff
Scrumptious (Apple) named by the local kindergarden - yuck
    Gala (Apple) Bingo

I could add loads more !

So what attracted you to a name that's unpronounceable?? The write up must have been amazing!

I'm also looking forward to eating 'fat babies ' this summer. I take great delight in saying 'Huauzontle ' as well as eating it. I also just like the name 'uchiki kiri ' for a squash.

I don't actually grow milk thistles but I'd like to - just so that when someone asked what they are I could say "Silybum"

I'm the same with the Huauzontle - & apparently my pronunciation gets quite outlandish at times

There's just something nice about wandering around the garden saying "ooh, the (insert name) is doing well".

It was listed in a catalogue of a specialist scion wood provider, amealias apples if I recall correctly. I don't know anything else about it.

Well I will go 'knobby russet' and you have to emphasise when you say it

Strawberry honeoye always makes me cringe. I do have some as they are the nicest tasting early strawberries I have found, but I loathe the name and would have bought them much sooner with a better one.
