Hi all planted my Broadies in loo roles about 4 - 5 weeks ago, they are about 7" tall and will be planting them out in the next few days.

Broad beans are pretty hardy, unlike French and runner beans. I protect my early sowings from the snow with net tunnels, but this time of year, I just bung them outside

Got 2 lots outside - Crimson Flowered at home (so I can keep the seed) and Red Epicure at the lottie. I sowed another set of each - in modules - to get a follow-on. These are just coming through.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Mine have been planted for a couple of weeks now and were outside in pots for about a week before that. Have loads this year, Express and Imperial Longpod up the lottie (old seeds, didn't expect THAT many to germinate), Crimson Flowered in the front garden at home (thanks Flum) and Red Epicure in the back (thanks again, Flum!). Both the ones at home are for seed saving. Not thinking of giving them any protection although had to prop some of them up when we had really high winds a week or so ago.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

i've planted a few lots in roos and pots, growing nicely, just starting to harden them off. how long do i need to harden them off for?Comment

Mine were doing well, Monday they were fine, today when I checked they are being attacked by bean weevils. When I tried knocking the plants to get the weevils to drop into a pot, I got a lot of ants too, so although I couldn't see any aphids, I washed them down with a dilute washing up liquid solution in case.
If I can get some sticky fly papers or something, perhaps the little ******s will stick to those when I shake the plants. Apparently they don't go for the pods, but lay their eggs round the roots which can weaken the plant. My first ones, sown in the greenhouse in Nov, and planted out late Jan, are flowering now.Last edited by BarleySugar; 10-04-2009, 09:26 PM.I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
