If anyone is inclined to grow a big anything, a must read is -How to Grow Giant Vegetables
by Bernard Lavery . There are second hand copies available from Amazon but you may even find a copy in your local library.

For those with aspirations to grow the world's heaviest onion, you only have to beat Peter Glazebrook's record of 18lbs 1oz set in 2012. See a pic of the beastie here Harrogate Flower Show - Heaviest Onion Competition

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

p.s. prize money at Harrogate for heaviest onion £500 +an extra £1000 if the world record is broken. http://www.flowershow.org.uk/downloa...%20version.pdf £500 doesn't even cover the cost of heat and light over the winter months.

Alison, the world record onion wouldn't have been eaten. It would have been put down to seed as the seeds sell from £5 for 50 and that's just for the strain, not necessarily the winning onion.

The big onion is just that, a big onion and tastes like an ordinary onion. One helluva lot of onion rings

I'm sure it does taste like an onion but not all onions taste the same and it's been my experience that larger veg often doesn't taste as good as the normal stuff but that could be the varieties I grow are meant to be say tennis ball not beach ball sized and things will always taste best at the "correct" size for the variety. Suppose some of it is that I can't get my head around growing veg or fruit for any other reason other than eating.

coincidentally, today I went to a local hydroponics shop to try to buy some unsulphured molasses to add to my first effort at compost tea. The shop owner kindly gave me a packet of giant pumpkin seed. (was supposed to be sown by last september buy hey, it will be fine). So apart from my normal exhibition veg, I'll be having a real go at a big pumpkin.

If your looking for the easiest i would have thought pumpkins, squash or marrows would fit the bill.
But it seems to be the onions that attract most attention. I religiously watch this mans vidios.....

My seeds form Mr Glazebrook have already been planted.

Not that I want a giant just something large enough not to look a dope when my mate shows me his. T'was declared a draw last year.
