Gherkins need training or trailing, preferably the former. I greenhouse grow mine although some varieties are outdoor. Which do you have?

Gherkins will trail untidily across the ground. To get the most out of them I train them up poles as it saves space.

I trained mine up a trellis last year which worked well.

Mine went up chicken wire - they only got to 2' tall/long because I didn't water them

If you cosset them (isn't that a lovely word? I'd like to be cosseted) they will carry on fruiting into October and just keep growing! I grew them up a little wigwam in the flower border and in a big bucket! Going to try a rose arch this year.
