    Hi All

I'm wanting to plant some garlic and I believe this is the right time of year for this. Does anyone have any advice as to what is a good garlic to plant?

    Cheers

You are a bit ahead of your self Drops. It goes in about the end of November or there is another sort for spring planting. As to the best sort, well the Garden centers will have some at the right time so you could ask them. However I am sure an English grape will be along with more advice.

Bit early to plant just yet, but as Roitelet says garden centres will have plenty of choice. I must admit I have had better success rates with buying bulbs of garlic from the supermarket and splitting them into cloves and planting than I have from several types of expensive "special" garlic from garden centres and seed suppliers.

Well, I am due to plant mine mid Sept; last year it was the 18th and I usually get a good crop.

I bought a clove of elephant garlic and some purple garlic from the Isle of Wight people yesterday; and it will be going in very soon. Just need to prepare it's space.

The Garlic Farm Isle of Wight is good for garlic. The Garlic Farm for all things garlic

I normally plant mine at the start of October. If you want to try a variety of types you could get the Garlic Lovers Collection from the Garlic Farm. If you enter the code "GYO10" you might still get £5 off.

I've grown "proper" expensive Isle of Wight garlic, and supermarket garlic: both types end up tiny and not-very-good

Last year I used the proper expensive stuff from the garlic farm, but am planning to use my own best ones this year, and if that's not enough I'll try one from the farm shop.
I planted mine mid september last year and got a good crop in June.

Usually I just use my own, and will do for the main crop...but I just had to buy some yesterday - and my garlic usually grows really well so I just want a nice huge Elephant Garlic head just for the fun of it.

Last year I planted a French variety called Cristo and some Solent Wight. Both were excellent!
The best ones were started in modules in the greenhouse in February then planted out when the ground thawed. I did this because I panicked as I couldn't see any sign of the ones planted in Sept/Oct. Thankfully, these came through the winter too, but weren't as good.

Likewise, TS. It's not worth taking up two fishboxes for nearly a year only to end up with cloves that are almost too fiddly to skin. Same for me with onions. Neither is expensive, so I'll be buying them next year and giving the space to a crop that delivers! Like my wonderful Parmex carrots and squashes galore!

Is there anything else that can be planted alongside the garlic? Or should it be in a bed by itself?

                              Thanks
