Garlic in a bucket?

It is the first time I have tried but I have four cloves to a bucket and they appear to be well spaced and so far doing okay.
Shop bought Garlic can grow okay but it can be hit and miss as they are more prone disease and they may be from areas that are from a warmer climate. If you have the room to spare, give it a go.

Got a few spare buckets which I probably won't need until the garlic is done. Will just remember to put the garden centre garlic and the shop stuff seperate.

When you say buckets, I hope you mean they have drainage holes. If not anything you plant in them may well rot. Garlic is a bit like onions, and really only needs to be about 4 or 5 inches apart.

I planted 4 shop bought cloves into a small container (12"dia) last year and 2 came up. They were small bulbs when cropped, but at least they did grow. I didn't spend any time on them, just stuck 'em in and waited

It's worth giving it a go.

Yeah they have all been doctored last year when I had pepper plants in them!

Hi,

Garlic is really easy to grow, even shop bought but like mazel-bee says its more prone to disease.

If you are growing in buckets it definitely needs drainage or it will rot.

One other thing to think about is that it needs a cold period so the bulb seperates or you will end up with one big clove.

Hello Gryfon, Garlic doesn't need anything as deep as a bucket. I think about 8" deep container wii be fine. I have some growing in a crate and they look wonderful. As long as you get your garlic planted by March so they get some cold you should be fine. I planted mine in November. It was shop bought but a variety (Melody) grown in Nairn in the north of Scotland so hoping it's super hardy. But in Guernsey maybe that doesn't matter.

Hi Gryfon,

By the book it says that garlic needs a month or two of cold weather 0-10 degrees C to make bublets but I'm no expert and I'm sure some kind person on here can confirm
