  • French Bean identification

    Good afternoon all,

I planted some old french beans this year, the ones that germinated were called Calan Roman (sp?), but I can't find anything online about them.

They were just in a plastic packet (so probably from an old seed circle I was part of years back) and I used the information from another bought packet for sowing and planting but now I'm unsure what type they are for support etc.

I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of these and had any information? If it helps, the dried beans were a sort of burgundy-purple colour with black flecks. The plants are only about 7" high but have already had a couple of flowers - I think these were off-white.

On the plus side, approx 70% germination from beans at least 7 years old isn't bad going! One to keep for next year if they're nice.

Calan is a town in Romania. Is it possible that the seeds came from there?

That's entirely possible - it was a Europe-wide seed group. Unfortunately it disbanded a good few years ago and I have no way to find out from anyone on it where the seeds were from.

Just out of curiosity, do the flowers have a little purple/burgundy in their petals?

Just been playing around with the name.

Calan = Calan \c(a)-lan\ as a boy's name is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and the meaning of Calan is "slender".

Could it be a slender type of bean?
Is Calan the person who donated them perhaps?

          Any of these look similar??

          Good luck with your ID!!

Perhaps if you have a few spare you could join the seed swap on here???

I'm not sure - I didn't notice any on the single flower I've had so far, but there are new ones forming so I'll have a look when they open

No, unfortunately none of them look the same. In colouring they looked most like runner beans, but the size and shape was that of french beans.

I don't have any left this year, but if they grow ok and taste nice I'll be saving seed, so I'll definitely donate some for next year.
