  • First earlies

    Hi all,

Is it too late to sow first earlies?

Because of bad weather & a bad hip I'm only ready to sow the seed potatoes that have been chitting.

    All advice gratefully received!

    Thanks in advance.

    Kenneth

Some of us have only had them in a couple of weeks - others have done so recently. I am putting some more in at home today because of lack of space. Go for it and take care of that hip

I'm with you Ken. Just dug the first bed in my new plot and want to put some potatoes in to break up the soil a bit. Can anyone tell me a good reliable variety to go for? Don't really understand the First early/ second early thing either. Can anyone explain? Ta in advance. Toby

First earlies are ready first - take a shorter time to crop. Second earlies take a longer time to crop than firsts and maincrop take even longer.

Gerrem in Ken, they should be ready in 6-8 weeks.

Hi Kenneth, I'm growing mine in flower buckets from the supermarkets - one per bucket, using old compost from last year's toms. Its No Dig and very easy on the hip

Go for it Kenneth, They may be a bit later than usual but they will be just as delish!
I only managed to plant most of mine a few days ago and I'm hoping the extra warmth in the soil will bring them on a treat. Good luck, hope they do well

I put mine in this weekend, due to the weather! I'm assuming that as they grow quickly there'll be no problem and when everyone else has eaten theirs and are longing for a nice fresh new potato me and you Ken we'll be tucking in to ours Good luck everyone, another strange year.

You can plant them any time, they will probably do better than the ones I planted in mid February, only starting to show their heads now. You could rename them first deferred earlies.

I put some in a few weeks ago but I also have quite a lot more to put in. I'm very late with everything this year but so is the weather! Fingers crossed the blight will stay away....

I'm keeping some back for as long as possible. If the seeds are still alive in September I'll plant them then for a xmas harvest, but the hard part is keeping them cool enough for long enough ... probably have to plant in June if they get too soft.
