  • Feeding vegetables...

    Hi,

I keep reading posts on the various forum as I would like to learn as much as I can about growing veg...

my question is about feeding my growing plants... all my tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, peppers are in containers and I have mixed compost with some miracle grow plant food.
now I am wondering if I also need to give the plants some liquid feeding ? is that not going to be too much ?

    thanks for your advice

    Hi Stephanie,

I have initially dug Fish Blood and bone into the soil before planting and every 5 weeks I sprinkle a little more around the plants and gently work it into the soil. I addition I have used Seaweed Extract at the early stages of my plants development once I planted them in their final positions and they, particularly the brassicas have grow really well.

I too need to learn more about what to feed my Veg, but at the moment I have been using Tomerite on my Courgettes, Marrow, Butternut Squash, Dupling Squash and Pumpkins as I am not sure what else to use.

I have invested in some comfrey and my neighbour has loads of it so we will be making some fertilizer with that as well but at the moment we cant.

I am sure the rest of the vines will educate us further

    Kind Regards

    Ed

      Thanks Ed for your reply.
I think I'll go ahead and get some liquid fertilizer then ;-)

Plants in containers will need more feeding than those in the ground. If your soil is in good condition with plenty of good compost dug in before planting they shouldn't need much more than the odd sprinkle of BFB or Growmore. Overfeeding can be bad so be careful or you'll end up with weak plants prone to disease...a bit like overfeeding humans.

          Hi,
that's what I was thinking... no feeding isn't good, but too much isn't either... this is why I was wondering if I had to liquid feed the plants when I already added feeding stuff to the compost.
the plants seem to be growing weel so far, so they probably have enough feeding for now... I'll check and maybe top up the feeding in a couple of weeks...

          thanks
