I have just been reading the weather forecast and as we thought summer is over, or it was from the 9th august, we thought that last year winter starting at the end of august was bad but this is ridiculous, we lost all our melons to the cold last year, they rotted on the plant , in the greenhouse, so after all the rain and cold over the last week or two the leaves are looking dead, I expect to have to compost the 13 melons that are now virtually fullsize. at this rate the summer will be 2 weeks in june, full stop, we are having to wear fleeces and have the heating on because of the constant cold damp.it has been too wet to get the tatties out of their tubs, each time I try it rains...at this rate even the slugs will need lifebelts...one totally p***** off gardener..

I wouldn't give up on summer just yet. Some of the forecasts are suggesting warmer weather returning by the end of the month. I can't grow melons here in Cumbria, even under glass so I'm not surprised you have trouble up there. I don't wish to rub it in but it's been a fantastic summer here with bumper crops of a wide range of fruit and veg. Weather-wise it's a strange country we live in. -

this year has largely been like last, we see all the news of the "current" heatwave on the telly but no sign of it getting too near us and the figures forecast never seem to live up to much, we did go weeks without rain so I suppose that was summer but more than the odd day with sun and some warmth would be lovely. probably why scots always go for "hot" climate holidays no matter what the cost.. melon plants now definitely like a Norwegian blue parrot but managed to get one that was edible , so that's one up on last year...Comment

I have been growing melons here for over ten years and elsewhere another 25, along with figs and lately peaches(they crop early) and starting to crop apricots next year, all except the figs, in the greenhouse. the summers just seem to be getting so short, we are getting about 9 months winter weather each year now.....summers were better when we were kids...Originally posted by solway cropper View PostComment
