nothing like getting your hands dirty and making mistakes for really learning how do do it. Some of the Readers Digest books like "the gardening year" give you a good insight as to what to do and when, and you can usually pick them up second hand in the charity shops. Nothing against learning from DVD's but they are expensive and present a narrow view of what is done by an individual as opposed to just general good practice.

            Hi all
Thanks for all your suggestions. I know how brilliant you guys are on the forum as I'm also a newbie chicken keeper. The DVD was just and idea as a 'stocking filler' for my wife's birthday. I quite agree about learning from your mistakes, but better still if I can learn from somebody else's mistakes. BTW, Newton, we live in Cannock, Staffordshire
            Thanks again.

Have a watch of Claires videos on youtbe. She has a nice easy style. clairesallotment's Channel - YouTube

Also, have a wander round charity shops for gardening DVD's and tape videos.

There are a few threads ( have a play with the 'search' facility top right of the page) about books for beginners
Personally I love the Vegetable Expert (Dr DG Hessayon). It's something you can take with you to the veg patch when you need to check up spacing for planting distances ( I always forget)
It's light enough to read in bed too!

No idea about DVDs though- sorry!

What a thoughtful hubby- stocking fillers eh???...good man!

( oh- and can you pop your location into your profile??...makes things easier for peeps to give you gardening advice when the have an idea of your first frosts etc)
"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

                Location....Normandy France
