Does anyone recognise these squashes?

    Does anyone recognise these squashes?

    I planted seeds of Pattypan 'Pattison Orange' and these came up. I was really pleased when I saw a yellow fruit behind the flower, but it has developed into this monster and looks nothing like the pictures on the web of Pattison Orange. The green ball squash was sold as the same - they came out of the same seed pack.

    I have also attached a photo of the two plants they are growing on - I realised too late that two squashes in one pot wasn't ideal, but by then I was too soft to destroy one.

    Now - are these summer, winter or ornamental - I'm really hoping summer because my courgettes are really holding back at the moment and squeezing out two tiddlers every 4/5 days.

    And if you do recognise them - how much larger should I let them get (my hands are quite big!).

    They look like summer squash Nellie but I can't say what type.
    Sometimes you do get different squash coming out of the same packet.

    My courgettes were going great guns then they stopped. I fed them with Miracle Gro Organic and off they went again. Might be worth a try.

      I might give that a try, thanks - perhaps a little spoiling will perk them up a bit! I've been having a google, and I think the yellow one might be 'Starburst' - but I still don't know how big it's supposed to get - do we have one each or grow it big and stuff it. I'll have to experiment.

        I think Starburst are just little Pattipan squash and you'll need one each.

          Can't be Starburst then, the way this one is growing we may have to invite friends around!

            As a relative of the courgette, do they not just keep growing, like a courgette goes to a marrow?

            I had one of the Starburst grow to a size bigger than that before I picked it.

              That's what worries me, I know what size to pick a courgette, but don't know when the yellow blob is ready, and don't want to leave it too long in case it suppresses further fruit - I suppose it's just suck it and see (no pun intended). There is another one starting up now, and the round green squash is now bigger(!) and turning yellow as well.

                It suggests between 2" and 4".

                I picked my first one too big, but since that came off the plant, a number of females have started to grow.

                Hope this helps, though I am a novice myself!

                  Thanks for that planesailing - looks like I'm up for a big mixed bowl of asst squash and courgette with garlic, very Jamie, hopefully this will make up for the woefully green tomatoes I seem to be growing!

                    Patty Pans!

                    We've grown lots of patty pans this year, in fact all sorts of various squash. We normally pick our patty pans when they are about 2 to 4" big as they are best when young. We have both the green and yellow ones. We have also grown a dumpling type of squash, which as yet we haven't picked. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do with these? Apart from steaming or adding to stir fries with the patty pans, has anyone got any other suggestions of cooking them? We also have loads of pumpkins growing so will also be looking for interesting recipes for these.
