I've just got back from my lottie having discovered that my spuds exploded in a mass of goo!! The planted tuber was just a pile of slimy stuff, tho the spuds around it were ok.
Someone please tell me what is wrong with them!!

Nothing wrong at all, sickntired. That is what happens to the tuber you planted. It's only purpose is to make a plant that will produce more potatoes. You have those and they are fine, so you should be pleased. Usually the rotted original tuber sort of disappears into to the soil so you don't notice it, but this year has been so wet it was probably just still sitting there.

Thankyou rustylady, I was so worried I had discovered a new disease!!! I guess it was the large amount of rain because my earlier crop was fine. It was kinda gross tho!!!

All good organic matter for the soil though!

The important thing to remember is that when you are fertling down in the soil looking for spuds - wear gloves! It's disgusting when you discover that gooey potato even with the gloves on!

I've never worked out why it is that sometimes the original tuber remains (it actually swells!) then sometimes it goes into the gooey mess, and then sometimes - poof! it disappears altogther. Weird!

I have looked upon it like this, If you stick you finger in the original seed poatatoe it reminds you of how lucky you are when you dont find the original seed potatoe
But yes everyone's right when you do its not nice at all, I'd rather pick slugs up thatn stick my finger into a smelly old seed potatoe.
But hey that's life! some you win some you lose as long as you learn from the mistakes your going to be OK.

It's simply that the seed spud has had all the goodness and energy sucked out of it by its progeny and is left limp and lifeless. This will all be achingly familiar to those of us with children!

You can 'stick' your advice Rat (in the nicest possible way! ) After all the time and effort (not to mention money) that's gone in to this wedding, we're going ahead regardlesss!
