They are late due to the 12 solid weeks of rain instead of the summer.

Do you mean the shape doesn't look right? The slightly pointy bit resembles our Blue Ballet/Blue Kuri/similar maybe. Our Crown Prince are 'flatter' I suppose, but pretty sure it doesn't matter. If you're not growing to show, just watch with curiosity. All those varieties are fabulous tasting - they look great anyway!

My Crown Prince are very round and blue - but not having grown them before, I may have mixed them up!

thanks for the replies guys, was the shape that made me wonder...expected them to be flatter in shape and thought i might have got a hybrid of some description. so long as it tastes good it doesn't matter, quite right Rhona.

on another note, do you reckon there's enough time left in the season for it to fully ripen?

At least yours looks as if it will be blue, mine is decidedly yellow - I planted Blue Hubbard and Crown Prince, from bought seed, so where has a yellow one come from

The others I grew were acorn squashes so I know I haven't got the plants confused *big sigh*

It does look more like Uchi kiri type that a Crown Prince from that picture, all mine are the flattended globe shape.

This should be a Crown Prince which has snuggled up with a Golden Hubbard.

Planted at opposite ends of the bed, of course!

I know this is a very old thread, but I was googling Crown Prince images and this came up - and my CP currently looks exactly like the one in the first pic! I wonder how it will turn out....

Yeah that was a while back - was the first year I grew Crown Prince squash.

After a couple more tries in subsequent years i'm convinced it was a hybrid of some description - when you cut it open it smelled strongly like melon! It wasn't inedible just overly sweet. Something I've not had happen since.

hope yours turns out better than mine did!

Oooh, hello! Thanks for posting, I didn't expect that.

Oh what a pity - I rather like Crown Prince for flavour. I have two on that plant looking very much like yours did, and although there's a hint of blue in the rind now, they're not the usual CP shape... We'll have to wait and see.

no bother, i got a surprise when i saw the post myself!

yours could just as easily have hybridised with something like a Hubbard and you'd get away with the flavour I reckon... mine was just distinctly melon like!

In fairness i'm just guessing thats what happened as they're the same family of plans so would be possible.

hope it's decent either way... you put so much effort in!
