    CARROTS the war begins

    The scene is set, the voodoo dolls are made the pagan gods will be blessed and the Tesco chicken is bought (for the sacrifice) I'm not running round the garden naked and hugging trees, I stop at that!!!!!
    The humble carrot will be defeated this year, they will be long, straight and plentiful, the day of the Frankenstein veg and its many tentacles is over. Borders are dug the soil is fine and crumbly. Let the war begin watch this space. (ok I know I can grow in tubs with lovely compost but that aint the point)

    You forgot the fleece to keep the carrot fly off

      I always enviromesh my carrots at all times from sowing to cropping to avoid the dreaded fly. Still get the odd bit of damage where I've failed to cover properly but basically OK

      Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                I grew totally perfect carrots last year (get me!)

                They were self-sown, I didn't plant them. They are in shallow stony soil with no nutrients and they never got watered.
                They also didn't have a bit of fly damage.

                They are in the school car park, which is surrounded for a few miles by concrete, roads & houses. No gardens. The nearest allotments are a mile away.


                So, grow your carrots in a tub in the middle of a town centre ~ possibly sneak a few seeds into municipal planting schemes? Say on roundabouts?

                  Sow on roundabouts?

                  I live in Milton Keynes, the roundabout capitol of the world (think we bought a job lot of them)

                  However the trafic flows (races) round these, at a fair lick, definitely not for the faint hearted.

                  Planting carrots could become a dangerous sport here!

                  I can see it now, a new sub division of RTA data from the hospitals

                  Carrot related
                  Drug related

                    I sprinkled mine with mint leaves last year periodically, which also seemed to help.

                      I cover mine with enviromesh from sowing to harvesting and always get a good crop..I dont bother with thinning them either...Too fiddly and attracts unwanted pests...
                      I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
