  • Carrot Root Fly

First time growing carrots. I had my patch covered with fleece but it started to break down - was only cheap - so I removed it, and haven't got around to buying enviromesh yet (it's been about a week) and today I saw two flies around the carrots. Pretty sure they were CRF. Killed the two I saw.

I am guessing I was too late though and they have laid eggs, so too late to put something over it. Where does this leave me?

I would cover the carrots anyway to stop any further flies laying eggs. Harvest the carrots as soon as you can, and see how it goes. The maggots take some time to chomp away at a large carrot, so you may find at first you can eat most of the root - just cut off any damaged bits. How much you can get to eat probably depends on how big your carrots have got already.

If they have laid it will take 7 to 10 days for the grubs to hatch you might look at how long it would take nematodes to be effective.

I will cover the remaining ones with some more cheap fleece till the enviromesh arrives. The carrots are tiny. They have germinated - and grown - really slowly.
Nematodes sound promising. Are the veg pack ones they do with those in as well as other types sufficient do you think? Seems they are cheaper

I am not an expert but a friend of mine uses Nemasys natural fruit and veg protection.
