  • Carrot Question.

Why do some of my carrots tops keep flopping over and dying?

Some of them done this last year as well. For no reason they just flop over and die off.

Is there any evidence of carrot root fly? Otherwise your compost looks to have been quite wet as there is moss on the surface. Are they in sun? If they are shaded it might just be they are growing towards the light, got s bit leggy and flopped over. When did you sow seed? They might be ready for pulling.

They're not leggy, it's just these few int he same area that have all fallen over, the rest are fine. There is no carrot root fly either. They have been in about a month and a half so aren't ready for pulling yet.

I think the reason it's happening there is because there's space to do that, there's no supporting carrot stems next to that area so they have just flopped. If the other carrots had a huge gap next to them,a few of those stems would flop over too. They're not dying tho, they look green.

Just checked another one and it is actually carrot root fly. Little tiny white maggots. I forgot to lift them up higher once they germinated. Bugger. Will they all be affected?

They are at risk if you've found maggots in the carrot? I would lift the others now incase there's any maggots in the soil, don't give them a chance to reach all your carrots?
