    Carrot question

    Showing my complete ignorance of veggie growing here How will i know my carrots are ready? Do i have to pull one up and see? or is there a certain time of year that they are ready.

    Ohhh i really need to start reading up dont I, just planting them and watering them dont seem enough.

    Hi and welcome flippy. The seed packet should give an indication of how long they will take to grow. They will start to show their 'shoulders' above the soil (eventually) and you will have an idea how big they are getting then.

      The usual method is to plant them a bit thicker than needed and then thin them out once they have grown a bit. As you thin them you will get an idea of how big they are.

        Thank you. Yes they need thinning out, maybe that will be my next job and i can see how they are doing.

          I don't thin out, I just sow thinly. Even so, there are usually a couple that need removing: take the biggest & leave the rest to grow on.

          You can just brush the soil from the shoulders of the carrot to see if it's big enough for pulling.
