  • carrot pest question

A while back I dug up the last of my early carrots and discovered a white bug thing all over the top of them. Hadnt seen it all summer, only in Mid-Sept when I got this last lot up.

Was thinking it migjt be carrot fly, but they didnt really look like flies to me.

It's not the fly that does the damage, it's the maggot which burrows into the root. The fly simply lays its eggs and ermhh buzzes off

    Edit note,

that looks like aphids to me, maybe simply whitefly

It's not whitefly, and they only go for brassicas anyway.

Looks like mealy aphid to me, let me have a google ...

*is back in the room* ~ could be Willow-carrot aphid Cavariella aegopodii which lives on willow and carrots, greedy thing

I had these last year, all over the tops of the carrot...
I went for a type of mealy aphid - have a google!
Chop the tops off, eat the carrots, enjoy!

This year after i went over to raised beds and glass grown i had none!

                Thanks for your help everyone.

So if its any of the above I am safe to wash them and carry on like usual, correct.

Just as a subnote, these were beneath the ground.

Doesn't matter where the bugs were. Just dig, wash, cook and enjoy. Your allotment is not a supermarket with perfect clean symmetrical veg. You are growing your own for the taste, not the looks.
