    Just got some calaloo seeds for sowing.

    We eat a lot of it in our house but never grown any as yet so any ideas on the best time to sow it in our often crappy climate.

    Also heard that when the season is over that if it is left to it's own devices it will continue to crop for years.

    Anyone know any more info on this delightful veg?

          Hi all,

          Calaloo is sometimes called Indian spinach or Chinese spinach depending on which culture is using it.

          It is predominantly used in Carribean cooking and is delicious when cooked with fish.

          I think the official name for it is Amaranthus.

          I usually have it mixed in with salt fish and a few peppers.

          Very healthy apparently but the seeds are hard to come by.

              I had Calaloo Soup when I was in Grenada - it was a rich dark green and totally delicious

                Mmm my kind of food! Make a nice change from ackee with the saltfish!

                I went to Jamaica a few years ago for a holiday. I fell in love with the people and the food and the place! I have since googled many recipes for carribean food and have my favorits that I often cook now!

                I have seen Calaloo in tins but do not like to look have a feeling it would be slimy that way eyuck!

                I bet it is much better fresh cooked! Good luck with you seeds! Let us know how you get on as am intrested!

                    Real Seeds also sell leaf amaranth (scroll down to the bottom of the page).

                    They suggest: "Sow amaranth in mid to late spring, starting it off in a seed tray. Don't plant out too early, it will do much better set out in June and will quickly catch up and overtake crops sown earlier in the year!"
