Butternut Squash failure. What can I plant now?

You've left it a bit late for pumpkins, esp this year (they need long hot summers)

My Carol Klein book says you can do the following to fill gaps in midsummer (it's in the July chapter):

Sow:
beetroot, chinese greens, calabrese, carrots, chicory, corn salad, endive, florence fennel, french beans, parsley, lettuce, onions for overwintering, peas, radish (inc winter varieties), spinach, spinach beet and swiss chard, salad onions, sprouting broccoli, turnips

Transplant:
broccoli, brussels sprouts, autumn and winter cabbage, calabrese, cauliflower, florence fennel, kale, leeks, lettuce.

Personally I'm mainly concentrating on sowing things for winter crops now, after such a miserable summer... so I've got some cauliflower, PSB and pointy spring cabbage seedlings, and I've just planted a few other cabbages - Spring Hero and Tundra I believe - in pots, and will plant a few more when they show through. I've also sown some Long Red Florence shallot seeds to overwinter in the polytunnel, and have various salady / green stuff seeds to bung in when I move other things out. I do have a few calabrese seedlings too, because my first lot all bolted, so I'm hoping to get them in the garden over the next few days if the rain lets up a bit... also a few summer caulis - cheddar I think - which are still small seedlings. Any bare spaces or beds will be sown with a green manure for the winter - red clover this year. So I think there's lots you can do, depending on your preferences!

The pumpkins were started a little late Two_Sheds (began planting out then realised we'd only sown baby boo's) so bought some seeds. The polytunnel came in very handy and they're already the same size as the direct sown yellow F1 squash.
