  • Brown Tom' Leaves

I know that there are numerous threads on this subject, but have not found one that really answers a query I have.

I am growing marmande toms' this year and have grown them from seed in a tray, transplanted to pots on a windowsill and transferred to greenhouse on my plot.

The plants are currently about five inches tall and appeared to be doing well but I have noticed that some of the leaves have a light brown tinge to the end of them.

I grew moneymaker last year and did not have any of this. Is it blight as I thought this would not happen at such an early stage. I have been giving them a light spray with a mister every couple of days, and here in the midlands, though the weather has been nice, I don't think the sun has been sufficient to scorch them.

I have just picked off the few affected leaves in the hope that this will cure the problem, if it is a problem at all!

It wont be blight yet, but I think you may be wrong about them getting scorched if they are in your greenhouse as on hotter days my digital max min thermometer has nearly reach 40 degrees even though I have an autovent.

      Blimey!

Thanks Crichmond, better keep my eye on things in the greenhouse then! Never realised it can get quite so warm! May well be scorch then. Should I not spray them as much?

I dont spray mine at all, I just wet the floor in the greenhouse to increase humidity but that doesnt mean you shouldnt spray them.
If you are going to spray them do it first thing in the morning when the temperature isnt as high.

          PS: love your avatar.

Oh and the worst was a fortnight ago when the min temp went to -3.5 overhight and I lost half my tom plants to the frost inside the greenhouse. Not to worry though as I had 60 plants in there so with the ones still at home I still have 50+ plants.

I wouldn't spray water direct on the leaves, esp if they are getting sun on them. They'll burn.

If you want to increase humidity in the greenhouse, water the floor so you get evaporation.

Frana, you need a min max thermometer in your greenhouse to tell you what the temp has been in there. Either your toms are getting frosted at night, or they are being overheated. I'll go with the scorched, as they are still alive.

I wouldn't spray toms because it encourages blight....and it will scorch them if it gets too hot.

Just go back to basics, give them a seaweed feed if you have any, water from the bottom in the morning or evening and if there is a frost predicted - take your prized specimens in for the night.

No need to take them indoors if frost is predicted, just cover them with fleece or as I do kitchen roll, and if you arent using a autovent then make sure the windows are shut overnight. The reason I lost some of my toms to frost is because I wasnt watching the weather but now I dont need to as I cover them every night just in case until I can get a new regulator for the greenhouse heater then that will be on set to 4 degrees.
