Default blown cauliflowers

Some of my cauliflowers are forming heads now, but most of them have "blown". My allotment neighbour says it's because they weren't firmed in properly when I planted them? Is that correct or could there be any other reasons? My purple cauliflowers (two rows further down) were all perfect!

Thanks

Brassicas do need firm soil, but I've usually succeeded with every type of brassica except caulis. I don't know if they're particularly fussy but I buy mine from the local market now.

Hi, i've just cut our final cauli, and the head is slightly green...i thought this was just a bit of colouring from the leaves, but now i'm not so sure?! Any ideas?
