    Bloody weather

    left home this morning in the wind and rian and 5 degrees.

    Come home 2 hours later in blistering sunshine and a cremation in my greenhouse. Think I've lost some chillis and tomatoes - also dahlias and calendula!!

    I am absolutely gutted

      Ouch! I have to admit that my Gartenperle tomatoes, which are nearest the window, are looking pretty frazzled - time for a last-minute resowing, methinks! Oh well, the hanging baskets will look pretty enough with rainbow chillies and purple basil in them...

        hopefully - although i go on holiday in 3 weeks so that's not ideal! I always feel bad about asking neighbours to look after seeds. they are fine with plants, just watering etc - but seeds need that extra care dont they? Its difficult to expect people to give them that so i'll have to weigh the pros( giving seeds enough time to grow) and the cons (the trauma of losing them again)

          Make sure they're in the shade and they might revive? I'd be tempted to buy in some plants if they look like they won't make it. Companies like Simpson's Seeds have some interesting varieties as plants.
          April is awful/wonderful for those quick changes in weather...

            As soon as i found them i put them in the shade and gave them a drink. Some have come around - but i guess I'll get a better idea 2morrow.

            I hate it when plants die like that - i end up feeling responsible and sad.

              Calendula can be outside. They are hardy, and my allotment ones are starting to germinate in the soil now.

              Some of my chillies have been fried too - I'm going to either shade the greenhouse, or move it from south-facing to east-facing.

                I feel for you! I have just lost 2 months of work! I lost caulis, sprouts, rocket, white and red cabbage and kohl rabi all in my unheated greenhouse. I went away for 4 days leaving when the weather was grey and around 5 degs, had a friend to water but apart from that didnt know what was what. Came back to find all of my seedlings scortched and the thermometer showing the maximum temp of off the scale +50 degs!! - gutted. So my headstart on veg by having a greenhouse is wasted! I'll have to start again by direct sowing. On a good note, my heat loving seedlings are thriving, cucumbers, sweetcorn, courgettes and toms.

                  I think my old net curtain is going over the top of the greenhouse today, the forecast is "Scorchio" for here...
