    Best Tasting Peas!

    Ok, so after the 'best noo potato' thread, here is the BEST TASTING PEA thread.......

    I'm eating peas now - and I put in some Early Onward which didn't germinate that well (I sowed them very very early!), and then sowed some Kelvedon Wonder. I've noticed that the few Early Onward plants have produced bigger pods (with smaller peas - at the moment anyway) BUT the peas are much sweeter that those from the Kelvedon Wonder.

    Don't know about cooked as they haven't got as far as the kitchen yet!

    I've only grown Kelvedon Wonder Hazel. They germinated and grew no probs. None have been cooked. So sweet I just eat them raw. But nothing to compare them with. Interesting question though. AS discussed on another thread, would be good to compare varieties. I'm up for a pea trial.

      And what thoughts on including Mangetout and SugarSnap Peas in this section too, or should those have a thread of their own?

        You are reading my mind (stop it - it's scary! ) - i was just about to say '.....and what about mange tout......'

        And if you could only grow one, would you grow peas, mangetout or sugar snaps.........?

          I've never grown PEAS, and am just 'itching to', so would love advice on best tasting variety.
          I've grown Mangetout 'Delicata', and it really is lovey picked young and fresh, well worth growing.And can't report yet on the Sarah Raven 'Purple Podded Mangetout', because it's only 8inches high!
          And for the first time ever this year, we've grown Sugarsnap Pea 'Jessy'. Well, what a huge success. Just love it..... A really 'meaty' veg with loads of freshness.
          Hazel. Start one for each. I think it'll be worth it in the long-run.

              Ooh, that's good to hear Piglet - I just bought some canoe seed and was thinking of planting some for later on. I have read conflicting advice re support for them - will I get away with none in a sheltered spot?

                Are those 'normal' peas, PW? I didn't see peas in your 'gold standard' list! Do you grow mangetout and sugarsnap too?

                BTW - and sorry for being thick - sugar snap are the peas that you can eat everthing? If so, sound like good value in terms of time to prepare, and no waste - hurrah! Unless you are making pea pod wine, I guess........

                    They are normal peas Hazel and I forgot to add them to my list but will amend later. I intend to get more organised pea wise next year as I will have the space then.

                      I've been growing a first early(sourced from Dobies) called 'Little Marvel' They live up to their name! loads of sweet peas on strong plants. now on our third batch! but just found the first maggot! Definately one for the goldstandard.

                      For sugar snaps we grew 'sugar crystal' they were very sweet. but a bigger plant and so i'd say average yield.

                      Grew an excellent 'mange tout' alongside but I gave the rest of the packet to a mate for his wife to plant and can't remember the name..Doh! Will try and make enquiries.

                        Let me be the first to add Petit Pois Waverex. My first pickings last week, and they were superb, tasting second to none. Although very fiddly to de pod.

                          Just got back from hols and picked the first markana pods. A very sweet pea that I've not grown before (but will again!)
                          Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

                            My fave is Birds Eye.

                            only kidding, altho my Feltham First have been hit and miss...all pods same size, but peas inside are extremely variable...some big and hard, others titchy but sweet. Methinks I will try a new kind next year.
                            I did have some mangetout, but got labels muddled and so they are growing in with FF, all mixed up. Doh.
