  • Beans in potato planters

I've a *load* of beans going on this year. For a couple of reasons I missed out on potatoes too, so have 12 potato planter sacks doing diddly squat, with old compost in. Might bulk the bottom of them out with it, mixed with some BFB, then top up with new/homebrew compost.

I'm planning on using a few for beans - perhaps making a wigwam in them. They're 18" high, and 14" in diameter.. how many frenchies do you think I could get in 1? (climbers)

Like wise, with runners, I was thinking of perhaps 3 - viable?

What about dwarf frenchies, 3/4 per bag, near the edges?

    Thanks

Chris I think it might be a bit tight for 3 good runner beans but certainly big enough for 2.

Sorry I don't grow frenchies so can't help with that one.

Thanks Colin.. I've never grown (or eaten, as far as I can recall) runner beans, so no idea of the size they grow, etc!

I always grow climbing French Beans in pots very successfully...usually 4 plants in a pot about 12-15" square, one in each corner up a wigwam of canes. I have done the same with Runners in the past ... Should be able to grow the same in a potato sack with no trouble at all. Just remember to keep well watered and fed through he season.

I grow 2 varieties White Lady & Red Rum, both grow about the same size. I have two patches where I grow them up 8ft canes and one patch where I grow them up 7ft canes and then along horizontal ropes for another 5/6ft. The last format gives me my best beans as they hang down from the rope free of obstructions.
