  • Anyone out there an expert on growing Ginger?

I want to try growing a ginger root, anyone had any success? which bit do i need to plant, how much do I cut off the existing root from the supermarket, and when is best time to plant it, and what size pot to plant in?
An atheist is someone who denies altogether the existence of God. I'm an agnostic. An agnostic is someone who believes that there can be no proof of the existence of God, but does not deny the possibility that God exists.

Use a bit of ginger root which has a 'bud' on it (will be shiny and may be green) pot size depends on the size of the bit of root you are planting. I use general purpose compost with a bit of perlite mixed in to aid drainage. Mine is quite happy on the windowsill in the kitchen where it gets sun in the afternoon. Water when the compost is dry and wait patiently for the shoot - then watch out as it grows pretty quickly. I am hoping that this year I will get flowers (assuming it does flower). You can pot it into a bigger container later to allow the roots to develop.

I am no expert, but hope that helps.

It's as Shirl says MBronco. You can plant your ginger now as soon as you get a bit with a bud on it. Plant it with the bud just showing out of the compost. Ginger likes to be kept damp but not wet. It likes to be warm but not in direct sun. I tuck it in among the peppers and aubergines in the conservatory. And you need to feed it.
Sometime after Christmas the leaves will start to die down. Cut down the watering then and let it get quite dry. Once the leaves have died off leave it in the pot for 2 to 3 weeks. Then you can empty it out and see how much ginger you have.
I didn't get very much but then I had moved house and I think it got a bit neglected. I'm trying again this year and hope for better results from proper care. Good luck.

grew a chunk from the supermarket last year on the front room windowsill, started with a piece about 2 ins long in a 3 inch pot with multipurpose compost.had to pot up to a 9in pot 6 weeks later.it grew about 4 feet high, and finally produced a root weighing about 3/4 of a pound,no special fertillizer just baby bio like the other houseplants, was hoping for a flower but the bud got caught up in the blind.

I have three black flower buckets from Morrisons with ginger in all tree have new shoots. They were planted in January with some bottom heat. You should be able to start it off now on a warm windowsill, It does grow to a couple of feet in height and the warmer you can keep it the better.
