    to plant "aqua dulce" broadbeans?

  • #2
I sowed seed direct late October but they got decimated by mice. I put some in loo roll inners in the cold frame three weeks ago and they are now large enough to plant out on the lottie. My job for tomorrow. You may get away with doing that but the days are short now so it may not work, but I'd still try.

I have some spare broadbeans somewhere.
I will dig them out and plant them tomorrow and we can compare notes CC.

I've got a packet somewhere too, so I think I'll join you. We both hate Broadies, actually, but I also hate bare, unproductive soil! Luckily, my Parents love 'em!

I'd give it a go. Nothing to lose. I always plant mine in November but when we have a cold Autumn (like last year) they didn't poke their heads up until January.

When you have sown the rows you want to grow sow any spare seed in a vacant patch of soil (won't hurt to sow these spare seeds closer together than normal). Next year, when the beans are growing well, it will be obvious where in the rows there are gaps because of failed plants. Use the spare plants to fill these gaps.

I put in two rows on Sunday, lets face it half a pack of Wyevale half price broadies won't break the bank if they fail, and if they come early, it's a bonus.

                Mice had all mine .
I think I'm going to leave it till Feb now. Some of the old fellas up our site say to roll seeds in paraffin to deter the mice and also sprinkle chilli powder round them .
