  • All gone to seed

How sad I feel right now. Having nursed 60 broccoli plants from seed all the way up to harvest soon and the whole lot have bolted to seed. I have watered them well every night so they get a good drink out of the heat.

Now I have a veg garden in bloom! - but no vveg to eat. I think the only thing we could do is munch some of the leaves as they are huge......... Not what was intended though

Oh that's not fair!. If you cut the flower heads off will they produce more that you can get before they bolt?

Shortie you might be right. With some varieties you can cut off the head and the plant will produce some side shoots.

It might be worth a try at least.. Okay, you'll lose the flowers but you sound really gutted about the crop loss so I guess you won't be so worried about the flower loss at the possible prospect of more brocolli?

Let me know if it does re-shoot as it'll be worth knowing

Sparkyaj, that must have been heartbreaking, I'd do what the others suggest & chop the heads off & see if you get any sideshoots & cut them off as soon as they look remotely big enough to eat.

Cut the tops off and side shoots should form - I'm only saying this as one of my 7 brocolli plants bolted and I cut the top off and it is now sending out side shoots which I wasn't expecting.

Oh Sparky, how disappointing. I do hope you can salvage something. If all else fails brocolli makes very fine soup. Chop it all up, stalks and all. Saute as much onion as you like, add some chopped potatoe and all the brocolli and cover with stock (whatever you like) Simmer about 30 mins. Put it through the liquidiser in batches. You can freeze it at this point. Serve with Lancashire cheese crumbled in the bottom of the bowl (or any kind you like) or a dollop of yoghurt spooned on the top. Delicious and you get all the goodness and flavour of the brocolli.

You could also cook the leaves as you would do with cabbage.

Thanks for that info. I will try cutting the tops off today and let you know what happens...

I like the sound of the soup.

My beans and peas are growing well at the moment, I hope they do better the the broccoli.

                    Thanks again,

I saw a tasty looking recipe in one of the Times magazines at weekend, it was a japanese dish with noodles in a broth with prawns, poached egg & broccoli on top & the broccoli in the photo appeared to have flowered so I guess it must be just as tasty that way unless it was some peculiar japanese variety.

Sparkjaj - like Eskymo I cut a flowering head off and now have lots of side shoots. We were away for the weekend and when I got back everything had bolted!

                          Nice Soup recipe Alice.
