  • Vanilla in a cold climate..

Hi folks, my other half was trumping about the price of vanilla the other day, has anybody grown it in a unheated green house? If so how far north? Would love to surprise the O/H with some pods.

Won't grow here.. needs hit and humid conditions. Even if you did get it to flower (very large vine) to make the pods usable takes months of curing.

I looked into it a few years ago, but then realised how much work was involved.

Try vanilla grass as an alternative. Also known as pandanus I think. I got mine from suttons. I grow it on an indoor windowsill. Nice looking plant but you need double the volume for the same amount of flavour apparently. Haven't tried mine in cooking yet, overwintering for one year before I start to harvest.

You know- here's a strange thing....my Xmas cracker question this year was 'What plant does the vanilla pod grow on?'

Absolutely no-one knew and were equally stunned when the answer was an orchid!!!

Needless to say I had to go and goooogle it!

so, having no idea at all about the vanilla orchid my gut feeling would be that if you can grow an orchid in your house, then maybe that's where you should try growing the vanilla orchid???
Of course it may be a more sensitive variety in which case, just ignore me!!

Might need a tall building though Nicos .... Kew: Plants: Orchids: Vanilla ... says the vine can grow to 100ft
